The Big Swindle is an entertaining, if overly familiar caper movie. Director Choi Dong-hoon and star Baek Yun-sik were at the screening I attended, and while Choi mentioned films like Bullitt as an influence on the work, the more obvious influence, for better or worse, was Steven Soderbergh’s remake of Ocean’s Eleven. It’s definitely an example of style over substance, but thanks to Baek as the film’s crimelord heavy, Master Kim), the estimable Yeom Jeong-ah (one of my favorite actresses, having seen her in this and A Tale of Two Sisters) as Seo In-kyung, the scheming love interest, and Park Shin-yang in the complex lead role, along with a strong supporting cast, the film is more emotionally involving than one might expect.

A pair of escaped convicts meet up with a group of gangsters by a remote forest road. After an arguement over a girl the mobsters have kidnapped, shots are fired and one of the gangsters is killed. The standoff is cut short, however, when the dead man suddenly springs to life and starts trying to kill his former friends. The zombie eventually goes down in a hail bullets, but their problems aren't over. It seems the gangsters have been using this forest to dispose of of their victims, all of whom are now looking to settle some old scores. Even if they get through this mess, there is still the question of why they've arranged to meet the convicts out here, and why they've brought along the girl. How are they connected to the dead bodies coming back to life?

A film suited to fit all age groups from 18-142. A conglomeration of ideas so absurd, the final product is unprofoundly genius. A sure-fire way to stoke up any waning get-together.
There is nothing that can prepare you for the weirdness that is “Naisu No Mori: The First Contact.” It is a work that defies description. Katsuhito Ishii, the co-writer and co-director of the film, is best known on these shores for the animated sequence in “Kill Bill Vol. 1,” as well as the girls + guns movie “Sharkskin Man and Peach Hip Girl” starring Tadanobu Asano. He worked with Asano again in both “Party 7” and “Taste of Tea,” the latter film taking home the Audience Award for Best Film at the SF Indiefest last year. But “Taste of Tea’s” observational exploration of family relationships is a far departure from “Naisu No Mori’s” non-stop whacked-out insanity. It is now clear that the gigantic disembodied heads and forehead-piercing trains found in “Taste of Tea” were just Ishii’s warm-up for the Cronenbergian flesh pods, extended dance numbers, and alien body fluid expulsion that comprise his latest grab-bag of filmic weirdness.
